Cell Memorial Service

A farewell to the departed and celebration of the living

Cell Memorial Service was developed by Henry Tan and Masato Takemura in collaboration with Monk Sogen from Rinzai-ji Zen Center and produced by Fathomers

On December 12, 2024, Fathomers was honored to welcome Monk Sogen from Rinzai-ji Zen Center to lead a cell memorial service as part of public programming for Emergence: Art from Life. This farewell to the departed and celebration of the living cells, organoids, tissues, yeasts, and plants featured in Emergence took place during the closing week of the exhibition. The artistic performance commemorated the cellular life in the exhibition for their services to art and science and celebrated the living community of collaborators that came together to create Emergence.

Cell Memorial Service was developed by lead Pillars of Creation artists Henry Tan and Masato Takemura and produced by Fathomers.

Emergence was on exhibit at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center from October 8 to December 15 as part of PST ART, presented by Getty.
